ORED is delighted to partner with Dr. Holli Seitz, an MSU Grisham Master Teacher, to offer this mini-course in Science Communication. Each 60-minute science communication webinar provides bite-sized science communication lessons that include opportunities for immediate application. This training is open to all university researchers, including research associates, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students. Participants may elect to join any or all of the programs, each of which will be presented virtually, but include an interactive module with a review measure. Those who attend all sessions (including the final, in person event) and complete a reflection activity, will be recognized with a certificate acknowledging completion of the course. The registration link is below the descriptions.
October 16th, 2025 - Clarify Your Message. Communicating with impact often requires us to get to the point quickly so that we can convey important information and garner support for our science. This interactive 60-minute webinar will focus on identifying and expressing your core ideas and include an introduction to existing tools for science communication message planning, including the “five slide approach.”
November 12th, 2025 - Know Your Audience. Knowing your audience and tailoring your message accordingly can increase the effectiveness of your science communication. This interactive 60-minute webinar will introduce you to the process of conducting an analysis of your audience and tailoring your content for different audiences to maximize effectiveness.
January 14th, 2026 - Craft Your Story. Humans are hard-wired to understand and retain stories. Crafting a coherent and compelling story to frame your science can help your audience connect to and remember your work. This interactive 60-minute webinar will walk you through creating your own narrative, from attention-grabbing beginning to satisfying ending.
February 11th, 2026 - Sharpen Your Speaking Skills. Successful science communication requires you to choose words thoughtfully and deliver them effectively. In this interactive 60-minute webinar, you’ll learn how to identify jargon, choose language that connects with non-technical audiences, and use vocal and physical aspects of delivery to increase attention and communicate with impact. Walk away with practical tools to speak more confidently in any setting.
March 4, 2026 - Communicating Science: What's Next? This final, in-person session will cap off the series with a luncheon event to celebrate, encourage connections among researchers across campus, and give participants a chance to practice or reflect on the skills they have developed. *Only participants who have completed at least 3 of the 4 course sessions will be invited to attend this in-person event.
